Updated for 2024

If you are just barely getting into personal development information, and you aren't doing any of the suggestions on the list already, then it will probably be hard to start all ten of these suggestions at once. I recommend trying out one or two at a time, and seeing which ones help improve your life.

In my bullet journal, I created a "Life Lessons + Rules" layout, and on this layout, I write down the rules that I have set for myself in my own life. One of my favorites is "class over crass". It's short and easy to remember! I recommend making or finding some of these sayings for yourself. They will help you remember what you are working towards.

Today, I wanted to share some of the life rules I wrote on my list this year with you, and a few others that I follow!

If you want, as you read this post, you can create your own "Life Lessons + Rules" bullet journal layout to write down the life rules you like!

1. Accept That Changes Will Happen

Just look what happened with the pandemic! Many of us had to go into quarantine, and I'm sure that the people who accepted that change happens and were prepared for it, adjusted easier than the people who were not prepared at all.

In 2020, I only completed 12/21 of my goals. That is probably because I lost sight of my goals when the pandemic hit.

Now this doesn't mean that you need to rack your brain for every worst possible case scenario, and then prepare for it, but it does mean that you should accept that things aren't always going to work your way, and you should be prepared for setbacks.

There will be setbacks. There will be problems. There might even be roadblocks!

When you accept that changes to your plans will happen, you will be better equipped, and more prepared to handle the challenges, even if you are only more prepared mentally.

Here are a few ways that you can accept changes will happen...

  • Work on changing your mindset
  • When something isn't working, and you've tried a few times, change your methods of reaching that outcome
  • Use daily affirmations like "I can figure out anything that life throws at me"
  • Work on having a positive attitude even when things go wrong
  • Look for solutions to the problem, instead of dwelling on the problem itself

2. Make Your Health a Priority

I've always been someone who has exercised regularly, and mostly that is because I take classes. When the pandemic hit, I had to stop taking those classes. This meant that my exercise regime wasn't automatically built into my weekly schedule.

After a week or two of doing barely any exercise, I created my own workout schedule that I stick to even though I am able to go back to classes in-person again. I found out that I love running, and I was able to run a half-marathon using just an app, hard work, and my own motivation!

When you make your health a priority, you are making yourself a priority! If you haven't made yourself a priority in the past, or you feel like you never have enough time for yourself, then you should make your health a priority.

But being healthy isn't just about exercise. It's very important to eat healthily too, which is something I am going to tackle this year. I already eat pretty healthily, but I can do better.

Side Note - Don't forget your mental health is important too!

Here are a few ways you can make your health a priority...

  • Read books on health
  • Cut out eating junk food
  • Create and stick to a workout schedule
  • Hire a personal trainer
  • Level up your workout gear if it will make you more motivated

3. Save Part of Everything You Earn (Invest in Yourself)

Finances. Finances. Finances. Money is necessary, but a lot of times it seems like you can never have enough. Here is my challenge to you for this year: invest in yourself. Yes, you need to invest in yourself, and your future.

This means saving part of everything you earn and setting it aside for yourself. Trust me, you'll thank yourself later!

The best way in my opinion to do this is to save a certain percentage out of every paycheck. Do this first before you start paying off everything else, and buying who knows what. It might be just 20%, but that is still $200 dollars saved out of every $1000.

Plus, if you have any problems with overspending or maybe a shopping addiction, this will help you because you just won't have the money to spend!

Here are a few ways you can save part of everything you earn...

  • When you get your paycheck, immediately take out the percentage you are saving
  • When calculating your budget for the month, take out the amount you are paying to yourself, and pretend like you earn less
  • Set a budget every month, and stick to it
  • Only go shopping when you actually need something and don't go shopping just to window shop

4. What You do Daily is Who You Will Become

So many people don't realize that the tiny habits they are doing daily, are shaping who they are becoming. If you come home every night and watch a TV show, then you are going to become a TV watcher.

If you scroll on social media a lot, you probably aren't going to become an influencer (sorry!) 😂, but you will be someone who passively watches other people live their lives. If you waste a lot of time daily, then you will be a time-waster.

You become what you do every day so do what you want to become. If you want to be a writer, then write every day and you will be a writer. If you want to be a dancer, then dance every day. I've heard that it takes 10,000 hours to get good at something, so if you want to master a skill, now is the time to start!

Pay attention to what good habits you are working on creating, and what bad habits you need to eliminate from your day-to-day life.

I've written quite a few articles on this topic, so if you are interested in learning more, you can read the articles below.

Here are a few ways you can work on who you are becoming...

  • Create a daily routine
  • Create a morning and night routine
  • Identify and eliminate your bad habits
  • Identify who you want to become and then pick daily habits that will help you become that person

5. Always Remember Class Over Crass

As I mentioned above, this is one of my favorite sayings that I wrote down in my bullet journal this year. If you want to elevate your life, then you should elevate who you are as a person, and one way to do that is to be a classier person.

That might sound a little daunting, but I wrote a post about 10 steps you can use to become a classier girl. No, you don't need more money to become classier! Here are the key takeaways from that post, but if you are interested in this subject, I highly recommend reading the entire post.

  1. Watch your posture and how you walk
  2. Watch your language
  3. Cultivate refined tastes
  4. Have a well-put-together wardrobe
  5. Always be learning and be up-to-date
  6. Have interests and at least be passionate about one thing
  7. Always mind your manners
  8. Be punctual and organized
  9. Don't overdo it
  10. Know your worth

The list above is a good start, but below I have a few tips to help you get started. Here are a few ways you can always remember class over crass...

  • Think twice or even thrice about saying something you will regret later
  • Surround yourself with classy people whom you admire
  • Watch and consume entertainment with classy people, and then use those people as role models
  • If you mess up, just keep trying
